Metal

Men's platinum wedding bands at President Jewellers are made bespoke in our Hatton Garden workshop, hallmarked PT950 at the London Assay Office. Platinum is the most durable metal we work with — denser than gold, more scratch-resistant in daily wear, and when scratched the metal displaces rather than wearing away. The right choice for a ring worn for fifty years. Court, D-shape, flat-court and flat-comfort profiles, in widths from 3mm to 7mm, plain or with diamond-set channel. From £1,400.

Why platinum for a men's wedding band

Platinum 950 is 95% pure platinum alloyed with 5% iridium or ruthenium. The result is the densest precious metal in fine jewellery — roughly 60% heavier than 18ct gold for the same dimensions, which gives it a substantial feel on the finger. It is also harder to scratch than gold; and when scratches do occur, platinum's atomic structure pushes the metal sideways rather than removing it — meaning the ring retains its weight across decades of wear. Platinum requires no re-plating (unlike 18ct white gold) because its natural colour is already a bright cool white. The hallmark stamp is PT950 followed by our maker's mark, the London Assay Office leopard's head, and the date letter.

Profiles and widths

Court. Curved external, curved internal — the most-chosen UK profile. Sits comfortably, looks balanced, available 3mm to 7mm. D-shape. Curved external, flat internal — slimmer feel, modern look, available 3mm to 6mm. Flat-court. Flat external, curved internal — contemporary square-shouldered profile with court comfort underneath, available 4mm to 7mm. Flat-comfort. Flat external, flat internal with chamfered edges — squared masculine look, available 4mm to 7mm. The most-chosen widths for daily wear are 5mm and 6mm; 7mm reads heavy; 3mm reads slim. Tell us your day-to-day work and we will recommend a width that sits well on your finger.

Finishes available

Polished. Mirror finish — the classic choice; platinum holds polish exceptionally well. Brushed (satin). Linear matt finish, popular daily-wear alternative to polished. Hammered. Hand-textured surface for tactile irregularity. Sandblast. All-over matt finish — very durable, contemporary. Milgrain edge. Tiny bead detail along the edge of the band for vintage-influenced look. Mixed metal. Two-tone designs combining platinum with rose or yellow gold inlays. Every finish is hand-applied after casting — the difference between machine-finished and hand-finished is visible on the finger.

Diamond-set platinum bands

Platinum is the metal of choice for diamond-set men's wedding bands because the harder metal holds the stones more securely than gold. Configurations: Channel set — small diamonds (typically 0.05ct-0.15ct each) between two metal rails, flush with the band surface, no prongs visible. Pavé set — tiny grain beads hold each stone, more sparkle, slightly more delicate. Total carat weight typically 0.20ct-0.80ct on a half-band, up to 1.20ct on a full eternity. Quality default: G-H colour, VS clarity. Half-band coverage is more common than full eternity because the underside sits against the palm and half-bands can be resized later if needed.

Pricing — what a platinum men's wedding band costs

Platinum men's wedding bands at President Jewellers range from £1,400 to £3,500. A plain 5mm 950 platinum court band starts at £1,400. A 5mm hammered platinum band sits at £1,600. A 6mm channel-set platinum band with 0.40ct of diamonds runs £2,200-£2,600. A 6mm full-pavé platinum band with 0.80ct of diamonds sits at £3,200-£3,500. Compared to 18ct gold for the same dimensions, platinum runs roughly 50-70% higher because of metal cost and the additional time platinum casting requires. Every quote is itemised before commitment.

Bespoke process

Every platinum men's wedding band is made bespoke in 7 to 14 working days from sample approval. Free lifetime resizing where the profile permits. Lifetime warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Is platinum good for a men's wedding band?

Yes. Platinum is the most-recommended metal for men's wedding bands worn daily. It is denser than gold (more substantial feel), harder to scratch, and when it does scratch the metal displaces rather than wearing away — meaning the ring retains its weight across decades. Platinum 950 is naturally hypoallergenic. It requires no re-plating because its colour is naturally bright white. The only downsides are weight (some men prefer a lighter feel) and price (platinum runs roughly 50-70% more than 18ct gold for the same dimensions).

How much should I pay for a platinum wedding band?

Platinum men's wedding bands in the UK in 2026 range from £1,400 for a plain 5mm court band, to £1,600-£2,000 for hammered or brushed finishes, to £2,200-£3,500 for diamond-set bands with 0.40ct-1.20ct of accent diamonds. A 7mm platinum band sits at the upper end because more metal is required. The historic 'three months salary' rule has no basis in tradition — spend what is comfortable; the ring matters more than the price tag.

Is a platinum wedding band worth it?

Platinum is worth the premium if you plan to wear the ring daily for decades and want a metal that holds its weight and finish. The durability difference is real — a 950 platinum band 30 years old will look closer to new than an 18ct gold band of the same age. For occasion-wear (worn for the wedding and special events), 18ct gold offers comparable looks at lower cost. Platinum is also hypoallergenic and requires no re-plating, which 18ct white gold does (every 2-3 years for a maintained bright finish).

How much is a platinum wedding band for a man?

A 5mm 950 platinum court wedding band at President Jewellers starts at £1,400 for a plain finish. Brushed, hammered or sandblast finishes add £100-£200. Diamond-set bands range £2,200-£3,500 depending on total carat weight (typically 0.40ct to 1.20ct). Widths add to the price — every additional millimetre of width adds metal cost. Every quote is itemised so you can see exactly where the price is going.

Why do some jewellers not recommend platinum?

Two reasons jewellers occasionally steer customers away from platinum. First, platinum is harder to cast and polish than gold — the metal has a higher melting point and is more demanding to work, which means workshops without platinum-specific equipment will favour gold. Second, platinum is more expensive per gram. Neither is a structural concern with platinum itself. At President Jewellers we cast platinum in-house at the Hatton Garden workshop using equipment specifically tuned for the metal, and we pass the actual cost through itemised quotes rather than mark it up.

Is platinum stronger than white gold?

Platinum 950 and 18ct white gold are similar in scratch resistance — both are quite hard. The key difference is what happens when each metal is scratched. Platinum displaces (the metal moves sideways), so the ring retains its weight across decades. 18ct white gold wears (the metal removes), so the ring gradually loses material. Over 30+ years of daily wear, a platinum band will weigh almost the same as the day it was cast; a white gold band will weigh slightly less. Platinum is also naturally white; white gold has a yellow base coated in rhodium, which wears off and needs re-plating every 2-3 years.

What is a divorce ring?

A divorce ring is a non-traditional ring worn after the end of a marriage as a symbol of independence or new beginning. The phrase has gained currency online but has no formal jewellery tradition behind it. Some women have their original wedding or engagement rings re-cast into a new design after divorce — this is something we do at the Hatton Garden workshop on request. The cost depends on the original ring's metal weight and any stones being re-set.
