Vintage engagement rings draw on the decorative language of earlier periods — the geometric precision of Art Deco, the floral scroll-work of Edwardian jewellery, the hand-engraved detail of late Victorian bands — and reinterpret them in rings made to order for contemporary wear. This collection of 21 designs spans that range: milgrain-edged settings, filigree shoulders, three-stone arrangements with antique-scroll detail, and Art Deco geometric profiles, each available as a bespoke engagement ring or as a considered alternative to the plain solitaire. All are made in our Hatton Garden workshop and hallmarked at the London Assay Office.

The collection is anchored by two design families. The Camellia series — from the Camellia Milgrain Diamond Engagement Ring at £1,286 to the Luxe Camellia Milgrain Diamond Engagement Ring at £1,836 — uses fine milgrain beading along the band edges and petalled shoulder detail to evoke Edwardian floral jewellery. The Vintage Secret Garden series — including the Vintage Secret Garden Three Stone Diamond Engagement Ring at £2,269 — pairs that same surface texture with three-stone arrangements and scrolled claws. Art Deco designs such as the Edie Art Deco Diamond Engagement Ring and the Daphne Art Deco Engagement Ring take a different direction entirely: linear, architectural, and restrained.

Every diamond in this collection is independently certified by GIA, IGI or HRD. Centre stones are available as certified diamonds, coloured diamonds or gemstones — several designs, including the Camellia Milgrain Green Gemstone and Diamond Engagement Ring, are supplied with coloured stones as standard. Every ring ships with complimentary insured UK delivery, free resizing for life, and a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

What is a vintage engagement ring?

A vintage engagement ring is one that borrows its aesthetic vocabulary from a specific historical period rather than from contemporary minimalism. The term covers a spectrum: a true antique is more than 100 years old; a vintage piece is typically 20–100 years old; a vintage-style ring is a new ring made using the design motifs of those periods. Every ring in this collection falls in the third category — new construction, historical reference — which means the precision of modern setting, the security of a freshly cast band, and the choice of any certified centre stone, combined with the visual register of an earlier era.

The periods most often referenced in this collection are the Edwardian era (approximately 1900–1915), known for fine filigree, milgrain beading and floral motifs; the Art Deco period (1920–1940), characterised by geometric symmetry, stepped profiles, and high contrast between the metal and the stone; and the mid-Victorian period, whose scroll engravings and multi-stone arrangements inform the Secret Garden series. Each brings a different quality of detail to the hand.

What vintage detail does for the centre stone

The principal effect of vintage setting on a centre stone is visual amplification through context. A milgrain edge — the fine row of tiny metal beads that runs along the band of designs like the Celestia Milgrain Diamond Engagement Ring — draws the eye inward toward the stone rather than outward toward the metal. Scroll-engraved shoulders do the same: the eye follows the engraving to its terminus at the stone. Art Deco geometric frames create a strong border that makes even a modest centre stone read as intentionally placed and visually weighted.

The trade-off is profile. Vintage settings tend to sit slightly higher than modern low-profile settings, because the decorative shoulder work requires depth. This is worth considering for clients who work with their hands — the additional height, though rarely more than a millimetre or two above a modern equivalent, is the most common practical consideration raised during consultation. On the hand, however, the added surface detail means the ring reads at a larger visual scale than its carat weight would suggest on a plain solitaire.

Best diamond cuts for a vintage setting

Round brilliants remain the most common choice because they sit within virtually any setting and maximise light return through the decorative frame. But several other cuts complement vintage settings particularly well. Old mine cuts and old European cuts — the predecessors of the modern round brilliant — have higher crowns, smaller tables, and larger culets, giving a softer, more dispersed light pattern that reads as inherently period-consistent. If authenticity of reference matters as much as optical performance, these cuts are worth requesting.

Oval and cushion cuts work well in Art Deco geometric settings because their elongated or softened outlines complement the structured angular metalwork. Emerald cuts also suit the Art Deco period — the Edie Art Deco Diamond Engagement Ring is designed with this in mind — though their large open facets mean clarity grade becomes more consequential: inclusions visible to the naked eye are harder to conceal than in a brilliant-cut stone. Pear and marquise cuts appear in some Edwardian settings but are less common in modern vintage commissions. For coloured-stone options, emerald, sapphire and ruby have long associations with all three of the periods this collection references.

How much does a vintage engagement ring cost in the UK?

This collection begins at £1,221 for the Adorned Camellia Milgrain Diamond Engagement Ring and reaches £2,269 for the Vintage Secret Garden Three Stone Diamond Engagement Ring. The UK average engagement ring spend is £2,247 (Bridebook 2026), which places the mid-range of this collection directly in line with typical budgets. Higher prices within the collection reflect greater total diamond weight, additional surface engraving, or more complex multi-stone arrangements rather than a premium for the vintage aesthetic alone.

The most meaningful cost lever is the centre stone — its carat weight, cut grade and clarity grade — rather than the setting itself. A well-chosen 0.50ct stone in a detailed milgrain setting will often read as more considered than a 0.70ct stone in a plain four-claw mount. If budget is a primary consideration, the Camellia series offers the most decorative return per pound in this collection, with the Camellia Indigo Milgrain Engagement Ring at £1,247 representing strong value for the level of hand-finished detail involved.

How a vintage ring ages over decades

Vintage-style rings age differently from plain solitaires, and in most respects more gracefully. The surface engraving and milgrain beading that characterise this collection accumulate a patina over years of wear — very fine scratches in the recessed areas of the metalwork soften the bright polished finish into something that reads as aged rather than worn. This is widely considered desirable on a ring of this type, in the same way that the leather on a handled object improves with use.

The practical maintenance notes are few. Milgrain detail collects soap residue and should be rinsed thoroughly; an annual clean at any jewellery workshop will keep the beading bright. The claws on these settings — often shaped and decorated rather than plain round claws — should be checked every two to three years, as with any setting. White gold versions will require rhodium re-plating every two to three years to maintain their bright white colour; yellow and rose gold do not require this. Platinum is self-maintaining in terms of colour and builds a patine surface texture over time that many wearers prefer to the original bright finish.

Made to order at President Jewellers

Every ring in this collection is made to order in our Hatton Garden workshop. Lead time is 7 to 14 working days from order confirmation — simpler milgrain bands at the faster end, intricate three-stone and full-scroll designs at the longer end. The process begins with a CAD rendering of the chosen ring, which is reviewed and approved before casting begins. Where proportions or settings require confirmation, a silver or wax sample is produced for try-on at the workshop before any precious metalwork is committed. Metals available across the collection are 9ct, 14ct and 18ct gold in white, yellow or rose, plus 950 platinum.

Bespoke commissions — combining a design element from one setting with the centre stone from another, or scaling a ring to a different band width — are handled through the same made-to-order process and quoted individually. Insured UK delivery is complimentary on every order. Resizing is free for the life of the ring. Standard orders are returnable within 30 days; bespoke and engraved commissions are not returnable, as they are made to an individual specification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a vintage and an antique engagement ring?

An antique engagement ring is one that is genuinely more than 100 years old — pre-1925 in the current year. A vintage ring is typically between 20 and 100 years old. A vintage-style ring, which describes every piece in this collection, is a new ring made using the design motifs and techniques of historical periods. The practical advantage of a vintage-style ring over a true antique is significant: you choose the centre stone, specify the metal, select the finger size, and receive full certification and a lifetime warranty — none of which is available when buying a genuinely old ring.

Which historical period does this collection draw from?

Primarily three: the Edwardian era (approximately 1900–1915), whose influence is visible in the milgrain beading, floral petal motifs and fine shoulder filigree of the Camellia series; the Art Deco period (1920–1940), which informs the geometric profiles of the Edie and Daphne designs; and mid-Victorian scroll-engraving traditions, which underpin the Vintage Secret Garden series. Some designs blend elements from more than one period. If a specific historical reference is important to you, that can be discussed and specified during the bespoke consultation process.

Can I choose my own centre stone for a vintage setting?

Yes. All settings in this collection are available with a centre stone of your choice — certified diamonds, coloured diamonds or gemstones. Diamonds are certified by GIA, IGI or HRD; stones are selected from inventory and delivered within 5 to 7 working days before being set into the ring on the standard 7–14 working day timetable. If you have a specific carat weight, cut or colour in mind, this is best confirmed during the initial consultation so the stone can be sourced and held before casting begins.

What metals are available for vintage engagement rings?

9ct, 14ct and 18ct gold in white, yellow or rose, plus 950 platinum. White gold and platinum both suit vintage settings well — white metal recedes against the fine milgrain detail and allows the diamond to dominate. Yellow and rose gold are historically accurate to all three periods this collection references and warm the appearance of lower-colour diamonds. Platinum is the most durable choice for intricate claw-work and milgrain beading, as it holds its shape longer than gold under everyday contact. All rings are hallmarked at the London Assay Office.

How long does a vintage engagement ring take to make?

7 to 14 working days from order confirmation. Simple milgrain settings are typically completed closer to 7 working days; three-stone designs with scroll engraving and intricate shoulder work sit toward the 14-day end. A CAD rendering is shared before casting begins, and a silver or wax sample is available for try-on at the Hatton Garden workshop where proportions or settings require confirmation. Insured UK delivery is included and tracked through to receipt. If you are working to a specific date, please note this at checkout or during consultation.

Are vintage-style rings suitable for everyday wear?

Yes, with a small number of practical notes. The milgrain beading and engraved shoulders that give these rings their character are set into the body of the band rather than projecting from it, so they do not catch on fabric or soften with everyday contact in the way that high-relief decorative elements might. The main consideration is the claw style: vintage-shaped claws — scrolled, split or tulip-form — are slightly more intricate than plain round claws and benefit from a check every two to three years. Annual cleaning at a workshop keeps the detail sharp and the stone secure.
