Metal

A plain wedding ring is the most enduring form the band can take — no stones, no ornament, the metal alone carrying the full weight of the occasion. That simplicity places every decision on the band itself: the metal, the width, the profile and the finish. This collection of 131 plain wedding rings spans 9ct, 14ct and 18ct gold in white, yellow and rose, plus 950 platinum, made to order in our Hatton Garden workshop and hallmarked at the London Assay Office. Rings are available as individual pieces and as matched pairs for couples — the same profile and finish can be cut in different widths so that two bands read as a set without being identical.

The range runs from slender 2mm court bands to substantial 7mm flat and step-edge profiles. At the considered end of the collection, the Theo Step Edge 5.5mm Wedding Band (£1,565) offers a distinctive recessed shoulder detail in 18ct gold, while the Tundra 6mm Wedding Band (£1,434) has a broader, heavier presence for those who prefer a ring with real physical substance. For something slimmer and more understated, the Slim Profile 4mm Wedding Band (£866) sits at the classic centre of the category. The collection also includes textured and engraved bands — the Petra Textured Wedding Band and the Verdure Engraved Open Wedding Band — for those who want surface interest without the presence of stones.

Every ring is made to order. All diamonds in stone-set pieces elsewhere in our range are certified by GIA, IGI or HRD; plain bands in this collection carry no stones and are hallmarked for metal purity alone. Every order includes complimentary insured UK delivery, free resizing for life, and a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

Choosing a width: from 2mm to 7mm

Width is the most consequential specification in a plain wedding ring. It affects how the ring reads on the hand, how comfortable it is for sustained daily wear, and how well it partners with an engagement ring if it will be worn alongside one.

As a general guide: 2–3mm reads as delicate and is most commonly chosen when a slim engagement ring will wear above it; 4–4.5mm is the classic all-purpose width — broad enough to feel substantial, slim enough to sit comfortably against most engagement rings; 5–6mm suits those who prefer a more prominent band, and is most often chosen as a standalone ring or as the primary piece in a two-ring stack; 7mm and above reads as a statement width, more often chosen by those who want the ring to be noticed on its own terms. The Slim Profile 5mm Wedding Band (£972) and the Slim Profile 6mm Wedding Band (£950) illustrate how a consistent profile reads differently at each step in width.

Understanding profiles: court, flat-court, D-shape and step-edge

The profile is the cross-section of the band — the shape it presents against the finger. Four profiles account for most choices in this collection. A court profile is rounded on both inner and outer faces, making it the most comfortable for rings worn without interruption for years at a time. A flat-court keeps the outer face flat but curves the inner face; it reads crisper from the outside without sacrificing much comfort. A D-shape is rounded on the outside and flat on the inside — the reverse of flat-court, and a traditional choice in heavier metals. A step-edge profile introduces a recessed shelf at the shoulder, giving the band a more architectural feel.

The Theo Step Edge 5.5mm Wedding Band is the clearest example of the step-edge form in this collection. The Slim Profile Beveled Edge Matte 5.5mm Wedding Band (£1,212) and the Slim Profile Beveled Edge Matte 6.5mm Wedding Band (£1,343) introduce a chamfered bevel at the outer edges — a subtle detail that catches light differently from a smooth court or flat surface.

Finish: polished, satin and matte

The finish of a plain wedding ring changes its character more than almost any other variable. A high-polish finish reflects light cleanly and reads as the more formal option; it is also the finish most likely to show fine surface scratches over time, though these can be removed by a workshop polish. A satin finish — a fine directional brush — diffuses the light and has a quieter, more tactile quality. A matte finish is the most subdued of the three, absorbing light rather than reflecting it; it suits those who want the ring to sit close to the skin in character as well as in form.

The beveled-edge matte bands in this collection — available in 4.5mm, 5.5mm and 6.5mm — demonstrate how a matte body combined with polished beveled edges can carry detail without introducing stones. The Sapele Wood Satin Finish 6mm Wedding Band (£1,303) takes the satin approach in a distinctive direction, incorporating a fine wood inlay into the satin band surface for those who want a natural material woven into the ring.

Matching plain bands with an engagement ring

A plain wedding ring worn alongside an engagement ring should be chosen with the engagement ring's band in mind. Three things determine how well the pair sits: width, profile and metal. Width should generally be within 0.5mm of the engagement ring's shank to avoid an uneven stack; for an engagement ring with a wider pavé shoulder or a halo, a 3–4mm plain band tends to balance the overall profile better than a broader one. Profile should ideally complement the engagement ring's inner face — a court wedding ring sits most smoothly against a court-profile solitaire shank.

Metal matching is a matter of preference rather than rule. Wearing matching metals is the most traditional approach; wearing contrasting metals — a yellow gold wedding ring against a platinum solitaire, for instance — has become an accepted contemporary choice and, practically, causes no damage to either piece. If you're ordering both rings through President Jewellers, our workshop can produce the pair against each other and confirm the fit before delivery. Browse the broader engagement ring collection if you are choosing both pieces together.

How much does a plain wedding ring cost in the UK?

Price in a plain wedding ring is driven almost entirely by metal weight, which increases with width, profile and karat. Slimmer bands in 9ct or 14ct gold start below £900; 18ct gold equivalents at the same width sit 20–35% higher; platinum versions are the most expensive because of the metal's greater density and the higher purity of the alloy used. The Silhouette Wedding Band (£866) and the Slim Profile 4mm Wedding Band (£866) represent the entry point of the 18ct range; the step-edge and wider bands in the collection rise to £1,565 for the Theo 5.5mm.

For broader context, the UK average engagement ring spend is £2,247 (Bridebook 2026); plain wedding rings in this collection represent considerably more focused expenditure. Made to order at President Jewellers

Every plain wedding ring in this collection is made to order at our Hatton Garden workshop. Lead time is 7 to 14 working days from order confirmation — straightforward court and flat-court bands at the faster end, step-edge, textured and engraved designs at the longer end. The process begins with a CAD rendering of the specification; a silver or wax sample is then prepared and can be reviewed at the workshop before metalwork begins, confirming width, profile and fit on the hand before anything is committed to gold or platinum.

Casting, finishing and hallmarking are completed in the UK; every ring is hallmarked at the London Assay Office before dispatch. Insured UK delivery is included on every order, regardless of value, and the ring arrives tracked and insured to receipt. Free resizing is available for life on every ring in this collection — an important consideration for plain bands, where resizing is straightforward and does not require rebuilding a stone setting. Bespoke commissions — engraving added after purchase, non-standard widths, or a custom profile — can be discussed at a workshop appointment. Visit our made-to-order page for details.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular width for a plain wedding ring?

For women, 3mm and 4mm account for the largest share of orders; for men, 5mm and 6mm are most common. These figures are averages and the right width depends on finger size and personal preference as much as convention. A wider band reads more prominently on a slim finger; a narrow band can look undersized on a broader one. Our workshop holds sample bands in multiple widths that can be tried at a Hatton Garden appointment before committing to your order, which removes most of the uncertainty.

What is the difference between a court and a flat-court profile?

A court profile is curved on both the outer and inner faces — the most comfortable profile for daily wear because it rolls gently against the skin. A flat-court is flat on the outside and curved on the inside; it presents a crisper visual line from above while retaining most of the comfort benefit. The distinction matters most over years of continuous wear: clients with very active hands or a sensitivity to band edges tend to favour the full court; those who prefer a more defined look on the hand often choose flat-court or D-shape.

Can a plain wedding ring be resized?

Yes. All plain wedding rings in this collection — court, flat-court, D-shape and step-edge profiles — can be resized, and President Jewellers offers free resizing for life on every ring made in our workshop. The practical limit is approximately two sizes in either direction; resizing beyond that range can alter the profile or distort the band, and in those cases we would usually recommend remaking the ring. Resizes are carried out by the same workshop that made the ring and are hallmarked again if the metal content changes during the process.

What metals are available for plain wedding rings?

The collection is available in 9ct, 14ct and 18ct gold — in white, yellow or rose — and in 950 platinum. The karat choice affects both colour and durability: 9ct gold contains a higher proportion of alloy metals and is more resistant to surface marking; 18ct gold is richer in colour and the preferred choice for those prioritising the warmth of the metal. Platinum is the densest and most durable option and is the most secure long-term choice for a ring worn every day without removal. White gold at 18ct is rhodium-plated for brightness and will benefit from re-plating every two to three years.

How long does it take to make a plain wedding ring?

Seven to fourteen working days from order confirmation. Court and flat-court bands in standard widths are typically at the faster end of that range. Step-edge profiles, engraved designs such as the Verdure Engraved Open Wedding Band, and textured bands sit closer to fourteen days because the surface work requires additional bench time. A CAD rendering is prepared at the outset, and a sample can be reviewed at the Hatton Garden workshop before metalwork begins. Insured UK delivery is included and the ring arrives tracked.

Are plain wedding rings hallmarked?

Yes. Every ring is hallmarked at the London Assay Office before dispatch. The hallmark identifies the metal purity, the maker's mark and the year of assay — the legal standard for precious-metal jewellery sold in the UK. For plain gold and platinum wedding rings, the hallmark is the only certification required; there are no stones to grade. The hallmark is struck in an unobtrusive position on the inner face of the band so it is present for verification but does not interrupt the ring's exterior finish.
