How natural blue colour forms

Pure diamond is colourless. The blue you see in a natural blue diamond comes from boron atoms — typically only a few parts per million — substituted into the diamond crystal lattice during formation. The same trace element makes natural blue diamonds Type IIb, an electrical semiconductor (Type IaA and IaB diamonds, by contrast, are insulators). The deeper the boron concentration, the saturated the blue. The Hope Diamond, the most famous natural blue diamond, is fancy deep grayish-blue.

Grading the colour — fancy light to fancy vivid

GIA, IGI and HRD grade natural blue diamonds on a scale from faint blue through very light blue, light blue, fancy light blue, fancy blue, fancy intense blue, fancy vivid blue, fancy deep blue, and fancy dark blue. Price moves dramatically up the scale — a fancy light blue 0.50ct round costs perhaps $5,300 in 2026; a fancy vivid 0.50ct can reach $198,700. Modifiers like greenish-blue or grayish-blue affect price meaningfully and are noted on every certificate.

Cuts that flatter a blue diamond

Blue diamond rough is rare and small. Most natural blues finish at under 0.50ct because the cutters work to preserve weight. The cushion cut returns the deepest face-up colour because the wider table holds more body colour. The oval and pear cut elongate small stones. The radiant cut is engineered for maximum colour saturation in fancy coloured diamonds and is popular among collectors. Round brilliants in blue diamonds are the rarest cut because they sacrifice the most weight from the rough — and price accordingly.

Lab-grown blue alternative — and why we list both

Lab-grown blue diamonds achieve their colour the same way as natural — boron doped into the crystal during high-pressure high-temperature growth. The chemistry, the optical performance, the hardness are identical. The price difference is dramatic: a lab-grown fancy vivid blue 1ct costs approximately $2,650-$4,650 in the UK in 2026; the natural equivalent is six to seven figures. Five fields matter. Colour grade and modifier — fancy intense blue is significantly more saturated than fancy blue; pure blue with no greenish or grayish modifier prices at a premium. What is the difference between a blue diamond and a blue sapphire?

Material. Sapphire is corundum (aluminium oxide); diamond is carbon. They look broadly similar in colour to the naked eye but differ on every other axis. Diamond is harder (10 vs 9 Mohs), more brilliant (refractive index 2.42 vs 1.77), and dramatically rarer in natural blue form. A 1ct natural blue diamond is worth perhaps 100 times a 1ct fine blue sapphire. For an engagement ring centre stone, blue sapphire is the more common choice; for an investment-grade collector piece, natural blue diamond.

Are light blue diamonds real?

Where do natural blue diamonds come from?

The Cullinan mine in South Africa is the principal historical source of natural blue diamonds and remains the most prolific producer. The Argyle mine in Australia (closed 2020) produced some natural blues. Smaller quantities come from India and Indonesia.
