Engagement Rings

An engagement ring marks the moment a question is answered. Our collection is made to order in the UK, in 18ct white, yellow or rose gold, or platinum, with independently certified natural diamonds at the centre.

The decision usually comes down to four threads: the cut of the centre stone, the setting style, the metal, and the diamond's specification. A round brilliant in a four-claw platinum solitaire is the most enduring form. An oval in a hidden halo softens the proportions without committing to vintage detail. A three-stone with tapered baguettes reads more classical, more architectural. None is more correct than another — they are different ways of holding a stone, and different ways of being seen.

The collection spans ten centre-stone shapes — round, oval, emerald, cushion, princess, radiant, asscher, marquise, pear, and heart — across solitaire, halo, hidden halo, three-stone, and gemstone-accented settings. Every ring is hallmarked at the Birmingham Assay Office, finished by hand in our UK workshop, and supplied with the diamond's independent grading report. Complimentary UK delivery, 30-day returns, and resizing within the first year are included with every order.

Most clients arrive with a partner in mind, a sense of style they've absorbed by watching, and a budget that has moved up or down a few times. The collection is organised so either starting point works. Browse by cut if a shape has already been chosen; browse by style if the silhouette matters more than the stone; browse by price if the number is the anchor. Every ring on this page can also be made bespoke — the same setting in a different metal, the same metal with a larger or smaller stone, or a hidden detail engraved on the inside of the band.

How do I choose an engagement ring in the UK?

Start with the cut of the centre stone — it sets the entire visual identity of the ring. Then choose the setting that supports that cut, the metal that suits everyday wear, and the carat weight that fits the budget.

Of those four decisions, the cut of the diamond is the one that most affects how the ring looks in everyday light. An Excellent-cut stone of moderate carat weight outperforms a Good-cut stone of higher weight on any well-lit surface. After the cut, the setting style determines how the centre stone is held and how the ring catches the eye: solitaire is the most enduring, halo lifts the apparent size of smaller centre stones, three-stone reads more architectural, hidden halo offers brilliance without changing the front profile. Metal choice is the third decision and rarely changes the structural longevity of a well-made ring; it changes the colour relationship with the diamond. The fourth — carat — is the most flexible and the one we recommend setting last.

What metal works best for an engagement ring setting?

Platinum is the most secure metal for holding a centre stone — denser than gold, harder to deform, and naturally white. 18ct white gold looks similar but is rhodium-plated, which wears over time and needs re-plating roughly every two to three years.

18ct yellow and rose gold are softer to the eye and slightly less hard, which means the claws will need professional checking more often if the ring is worn daily. With periodic maintenance, all four metals last a lifetime. The harder consideration is colour. White metals make a colourless diamond look whiter, which suits stones graded D–F. Yellow gold flatters slightly tinted stones — H, I, J — by making the warmth read as intentional rather than accidental. Rose gold sits between the two and tends to flatter warmer skin tones. Most clients in this collection choose platinum for the centre stone setting and pair it with an 18ct gold band if a contrasting colour is wanted on the shank.

How much does an engagement ring cost in the UK?

There is no single answer — the price of an engagement ring is set almost entirely by the centre stone and the metal. Between them they account for the majority of the total. Setting style and finishing detail are smaller line items but can compound.

The four levers, in order of impact: carat weight of the centre stone (the largest single driver), cut grade (the biggest visual difference at any given weight), clarity and colour grade, and the metal. A 1.00ct round brilliant in a simple platinum solitaire costs roughly twice as much as a 0.50ct equivalent of the same grade. Going from a Good cut to an Excellent cut at the same weight typically adds 15–25%. Lab-grown diamonds reduce the diamond line item by a meaningful margin for an optically similar stone, though resale and long-term value are lower. Halos, three-stone arrangements, and pavé detailing each add modestly. We're happy to quote against a specification in advance.

How long does a made-to-order engagement ring take?

From order confirmation, four to six weeks is the typical lead time for a made-to-order engagement ring at President Jewellers. Bespoke designs or unusual centre stones can extend to eight weeks. We share a CAD preview at week one for sign-off.

The schedule looks like this. Week one: stone selection from our partner laboratories' inventory, CAD rendering of the setting, design sign-off. Weeks two to three: casting, finishing, and the diamond setting work in our UK workshop. Week four: hallmarking at the Birmingham Assay Office, final polish, and quality inspection. Week five: insured delivery to your chosen UK address, with the option to collect from our showroom if preferred. We're aware that proposals don't always sit on a six-week schedule. If the date is fixed and tight, get in touch — we keep a small inventory of finished pieces and can usually accelerate the metalwork by a week when the design allows.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a made-to-order engagement ring take?

Four to six weeks is the standard turnaround from order confirmation, with a CAD preview shared in week one. Bespoke designs and unusual centre stones can extend to eight weeks. If the proposal date is fixed and short, contact us — we keep a small inventory of finished rings and can sometimes accelerate the build by a week. Insured UK delivery is included on every order.

Can I see the ring before it's made?

Yes. Every made-to-order ring includes a CAD rendering for sign-off at the end of week one. The preview shows the setting from multiple angles with the chosen centre stone positioned in place. We refine the design with you before any metalwork begins. Most rings go through one or two small revisions at this stage — claw shape, gallery height, band profile — and the change is included at no extra cost.

Are your diamonds independently certified?

Every diamond over 0.30ct sold at President Jewellers is independently certified by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), IGI (International Gemological Institute), or another recognised laboratory. The grading report covers cut, colour, clarity, carat weight, and the stone's unique inscription on the girdle. The certificate accompanies the ring on delivery and can be re-issued by the lab if it's misplaced.

What if the ring needs resizing later?

Resizing within the first year is complimentary. After that, most platinum and 18ct gold rings can be resized up or down by one to two sizes for a modest workshop fee that varies with the setting and metal. Some styles — full eternity rings, very wide bands, intricate pavé — cannot be resized without compromising the design. We confirm before any work begins.

Can I return it if the answer is no, or if the size is wrong?

Yes. We accept returns for 30 days from delivery, including made-to-order rings, provided the piece is unworn and accompanied by its grading report. Resizing the band as an alternative is usually faster and free in the first year. Our Returns policy lists the few exceptions — engraved pieces and certain bespoke commissions — so it's worth a quick read before ordering.
