A solitaire engagement ring places one centre stone above a plain or lightly-detailed band, letting the diamond or gemstone carry the full visual weight. The result is a ring that reads as direct and considered rather than decorative — which is precisely why it has remained the most-chosen engagement ring style in the UK for more than a century. This collection of 85 rings spans classic four- and six-claw settings through to bezel, pavé-shoulder and baguette-accent variations, all made to order in our Hatton Garden workshop. If you are also considering a setting with additional stones around the centre, the halo engagement ring and three-stone engagement ring collections are the natural next step from this page.

Within the solitaire category there is more variation than the name implies. A claw-set solitaire such as the Slender Solitaire or Poise Solitaire lifts the stone high above the band to maximise light return; a rub-over design like the Bezel Set Solitaire wraps the stone in a continuous metal collar for a lower, more secure profile. Bands can be plain, twist-set as in the Twisted Vine Solitaire, or accented with pavé as in the Shoulder Pavé Solitaire — each choice shifts the register of the ring without altering the fundamental architecture of one dominant stone.

Every ring in this collection is made to order. Centre stones are available as certified diamonds, coloured diamonds or gemstones, with diamond certification from GIA, IGI or HRD. Each finished ring is hallmarked at the London Assay Office and delivered with complimentary insured UK shipping. Every order includes free resizing for life and a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

What is a solitaire engagement ring?

A solitaire engagement ring is defined by a single centre stone set above a band without additional accent stones in the main setting. The word solitaire is borrowed from the French, meaning "alone" — the stone stands on its own. That restraint is the point: every element of the ring directs attention to the centre stone's cut, colour and clarity rather than competing with it.

The setting style varies considerably within that definition. A four-claw setting holds the stone with minimal metal contact, allowing maximum light to enter from the sides; a six-claw setting is marginally more secure and is the traditional choice for round brilliant diamonds. A bezel setting, as in the Bezel Set Solitaire, encircles the stone entirely and suits an active lifestyle or a lower-profile preference. The band itself can be plain, twisted, tapered or set with shoulder diamonds — provided the shoulder stones are clearly secondary to the centre stone, the ring remains a solitaire in its essential form.

What a solitaire setting does for the centre stone

The solitaire's primary function is to isolate and lift the centre stone so that it commands the full field of view. A high-set claw mount positions the stone above the finger, where it intercepts light from multiple angles — above, from the sides, and from below — producing the contrast between bright and dark facets that gives a well-cut diamond its visual movement. That response is most pronounced in round brilliant and oval cuts, though cushion, princess and emerald cuts all benefit from being allowed space and height.

Where shoulder pavé or accent diamonds are added — as in the Accent Solitaire or Baguette Accent Solitaire — the intention is to draw the eye inward toward the centre stone rather than away from it. The shoulder stones act as a frame. The proportional rule is that the centre stone should appear substantially larger than any individual accent stone; if the shoulders begin to compete, the ring moves into the side-stone category rather than remaining a true solitaire.

Best diamond cuts for a solitaire setting

Any cut can be placed in a solitaire setting, and the setting itself does not disadvantage any shape. In practice, the most common choices in the UK are the round brilliant, oval and cushion — in that order. The round brilliant is the most optically efficient cut and performs consistently under varied lighting; it is the reference against which other cuts are measured. Oval and cushion cuts offer more hand presence per carat because their elongated or wider face spreads across more finger surface area.

Emerald and Asscher cuts have a different character in a solitaire: rather than scattering light, they produce a hall-of-mirrors effect of parallel flashes. They reward higher clarity grades because inclusions are easier to see under a step cut's open table. Pear and marquise cuts produce significant finger elongation when oriented vertically and are well-suited to the solitaire's clean lines. For any shape, the solitaire setting is the format in which the cut's character is most honestly presented — there is nowhere else for the eye to rest, which means a well-chosen stone reads at its best and a poorly-proportioned one cannot be concealed.

How much does a solitaire engagement ring cost in the UK?

The UK average engagement ring spend is £2,247 (Bridebook 2026), and a solitaire is achievable across a wide range on either side of that figure. The setting cost alone — the mount without a centre stone — begins at £530 for a straightforward claw solitaire such as the Slender Solitaire, rising through £570–£620 for designs with pavé or baguette shoulder detail, and reaching £1,050–£2,066 for more elaborate shank designs such as the Manon Solitaire or the Simply Tacori Delicate Drape. These prices cover the setting and any shoulder stones but do not include a loose centre diamond.

The centre stone is the dominant variable. A round brilliant of 0.50ct in G/VS2, certified by GIA or IGI, will add broadly £800–£1,400 depending on cut grade and whether the stone is natural or lab-grown. A 1.00ct stone in the same grades adds £2,500–£5,000 for natural, significantly less for lab-grown. The total ring price — setting plus stone — can therefore be optimised considerably by adjusting carat weight, clarity, and origin. Our team discusses these trade-offs at the consultation stage before any work begins.

How a solitaire ring ages over decades

A well-specified solitaire is among the most durable ring configurations, partly because the design is simple enough to service and partly because the absence of a surrounding halo or closely-set side stones means there are fewer individual prongs or pavé seats to work loose over time. The main maintenance requirement for a claw-set solitaire is periodic prong inspection — once every two to three years is a reasonable interval for daily wear — to confirm the claws have not thinned or shifted. A bezel-set solitaire requires the least maintenance of any setting type, as the continuous metal rim provides inherent security.

Metal choice affects how the ring ages visually. Platinum develops a surface patina over time — small surface scratches blend into a consistent matte sheen rather than creating a noticeably worn appearance, and the metal does not lose volume as it scratches. White gold maintains a sharper bright finish through periodic rhodium re-plating, typically every two to three years for a daily-wear ring. Rose and yellow gold show scratches more readily but develop a pleasing warm surface character over time. All these changes are cosmetic rather than structural and can be addressed through routine workshop polishing.

Made to order at President Jewellers

Every solitaire in this collection is made to order from our Hatton Garden workshop. Lead time is 7 to 14 working days from order confirmation — plain solitaire settings at the faster end, designs with bespoke shank work or intricate shoulder pavé closer to fourteen days. The process begins with a CAD rendering of the setting; a silver or wax sample is then made available for try-on at the workshop before any gold or platinum is cast. Clients who wish to review the sample in person are welcome by appointment.

If you bring or source a loose centre diamond separately, it is delivered within 5 to 7 working days; once the setting process begins, the combined lead time moves to the 7–14 working day schedule. All rings are hallmarked at the London Assay Office. For further design guidance — setting height, claw count, band width or metal — the full engagement ring collection and our made-to-order service pages set out the options in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Are solitaire rings good for engagement?

Yes — the solitaire is the most widely given engagement ring style in the UK for practical and aesthetic reasons. A single centre stone in a claw or bezel setting is straightforward to service, pairs with most wedding ring profiles, and allows the stone's cut and quality to be appreciated without distraction. The style ages consistently: there are no fashion cycles that render a well-made solitaire dated. It also adapts to any centre stone — a round brilliant, an oval, a coloured sapphire — without requiring a redesign of the setting itself.

What does a solitaire engagement ring mean?

In contemporary UK usage, a solitaire engagement ring means an engagement ring set with one principal stone and no surrounding stones. The symbolism most often cited is the idea of two people — one ring, one stone — though this is a sentimental reading rather than an established convention. More practically, the solitaire communicates that the choice of stone was deliberate and considered: the ring exists entirely in service of that one diamond or gemstone, and every specification decision — carat, cut, colour, clarity — shows directly in the finished piece with nothing to mitigate it.

What is the three-month rule for engagement rings?

The three-month rule is a marketing convention — popularised by diamond retailers in the mid-twentieth century — suggesting a buyer should spend the equivalent of three months' salary on an engagement ring. It has no formal standing in UK custom or etiquette. The UK average spend is currently £2,247 (Bridebook 2026). The more useful framing is the trade-off between stone size, quality and metal: budget is better allocated by deciding which of carat, cut grade and clarity matters most to the wearer, then optimising within that priority, rather than working backward from an arbitrary salary multiple.

What is the difference between a solitaire and a halo engagement ring?

A solitaire uses one stone above the band; a halo ring surrounds the centre stone with a border of smaller accent diamonds. The halo makes the centre stone appear larger — typically by 0.20–0.40ct in apparent diameter — and adds brilliance to the overall face of the ring. A solitaire presents the centre stone at its actual size with no optical amplification. Solitaires are generally easier to pair with a wedding band; halos can require a contoured or curved band to nest correctly. Neither is inherently superior — the choice depends on the wearer's preference for simplicity versus decorative presence.

How long does it take to make a solitaire engagement ring at President Jewellers?

Seven to fourteen working days from order confirmation. A plain four-claw solitaire is typically ready within seven to ten days; designs with baguette or pavé shoulder detail, custom band profiles or bespoke shank work sit closer to fourteen days. The process includes a CAD rendering and, if requested, a silver or wax sample for review at our Hatton Garden workshop before casting begins. Insured UK delivery is complimentary on every order and tracked through to receipt. Bespoke and engraved orders are not returnable; all other rings carry a 30-day returns period.

What metals are available for solitaire engagement rings?

9ct, 14ct and 18ct gold — in yellow, white or rose — and 950 platinum. White metals suit colourless and near-colourless diamonds (D–H range) because the metal does not cast a warm reflection into the stone's pavilion. Yellow and rose gold flatter diamonds in the I–K range and complement coloured gemstones such as sapphires and rubies. Platinum is the most secure long-term choice for a claw-set stone worn daily: it is denser than gold and does not lose metal volume when it scratches. All rings are hallmarked at the London Assay Office before delivery.
